Pacific Pearls

Hiva Oa ist die zweite der Marquesas Inseln die wir besucht haben. Am Nachmittag haben wir nach unserer Ankunft eine Tour unternommen und das Dörfchen kennen gelernt. Stolz und mit viel Hingabe wurde uns die Sehenswürdigkeiten präsentiert… die Schule, der Polizeiposten, der Coiffeur :-) Auf dem Friedhof sind die Gräber von Paul Gauguin und Jacques Brel zu finden. Wobei die Sympathien klar verteilt sind. Jacques Brel wird als quasi Heiliger verehrt, welche den Marquesas helfen wollte. Paul Gauguin sind die zahlreichen all zu jungen Liebschaften bis heute nicht verziehen.

Die Insel ist dafür bekannt, dass es hier ganz viele Tikis zu bestaunen. Die Tikis sind die Bildnisse der Götter hier, welche die Ureinwohner angebetet haben. Ein paar sind schon der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich, aber ein grosser Teil schlummert noch im grünen Dschungel vor sich hin. Wer weiss, vielleicht ist irgendwann mal Geld da um sie zu restaurieren, vielleicht ja von der EU.  Apropos EU: An diesem Wochenende finden noch Wahlen in Brüssel statt, dass Interesse der Insulaner hält sich aber in Grenzen. Die subventionierten Plakatwände wurden zwar aufgestellt, die dafür benötigten Plakate aus Brüssel sind aber leider nicht termingerecht eingetroffen. Somit müssen sich die Wahlberechtigten selbst vorstellen, was sie auf den Wänden sehen wollen. :-)

Am Folgetag haben wir einen Ausflug gemacht um den Rest der Insel kennen zu lernen. Es gibt viele alte Stätten zu besichtigen und eben Tikis. Die Fahrt hat uns quer über die Insel in ein verträumtes Dorf namens Paumau geführt, was soviel bedeutet wie “Im Schatten der Blumen”.

Und natürlich durften wir auch hier zum Mittagessen lokale Spezialitäten geniessen. Dieses Mal bei Marie Antoinette. Da hier auf der Insel wilde Schweine und Ziegen leben gab es zum einen deren Fleisch. Es durfte natürlich aber auch Poisson Cru nicht fehlen. Als Beilage gab es Kochbananen, Reis und Kartoffeln und zum Dessert frischgepflückte Bananen und Gebäck. Begleitet wurden die Köstlichkeiten von einem frisch gepressten Sternfruchtsaft. Mmmh, lecker.

Hiva Oa is the second of the Marquesas islands we have visited. During the afternoon after our arrival we took a short tour and got to know the village. Pride and with great devotion the sights were presented to us ... the school, the police station, the hairdresser :-) At the cemetery, the graves of Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel can be found. The sympathies are clearly defined. Jacques Brel is worshiped as a quasi-saint, who wanted to help the Marquesas. On the other hand they’ve not forgotten until today that Paul Gauguin had numerous love affairs with (too) young girls.

The island is known for the many Tikis which can be admired. The Tikis are the images of the gods to whom the natives worshiped. A few are already available to the public, but a large part is still dormant in the green jungle. Who knows, maybe someday there will be money available from the EU to restore them. Speaking of EU: At this weekend elections take place in Brussels but the interests of the islanders is only limited. The subsidized billboards were indeed placed, but the needed posters from Brussels unfortunately did not arrive on time. Thus, the voters have to imagine for themselves what they want to see on the walls. :-)

The next day we made ​​a trip to get to know the rest of the island. There are many ancient sites to visit and of course Tikis. The journey has led us across the island to a dreamy village called Paumau, which means "In the Shadow of Flowers".

And of course, we could also enjoy local specialties for lunch, this time with Marie Antoinette. As the island is home to wild pigs and goats, there meat was part of the meal. Traditionally we could enjoy as well Poisson Cru. As a side dish, there were plantains, rice and potatoes and for dessert fresh picked bananas and pastries. The delicacies were accompanied by a freshly squeezed star fruit juice. Mmm, yummy.

Bei der Ankunft in Nuku Hiva haben wir zuerst einmal gelernt, dass auch einfache Technik für die Gepäckrückgabe ihre Funktion erfüllt. Die ersten Schritte haben uns allerdings eine dörre und eher trostlose Landschaft gezeigt. Eine stündige Passfahrt durch Pinienwälder hat uns dann aber auf die grüne Seite der Insel geführt. Der Weg führte über ein schönes Hochplateau, welches ein wenig an die Heimat erinnerte und die höchsten Berge sind doch stolze 1200 Meter hoch.

Im Gegensatz zu den Gesellschaftsinseln sind die Marquesas Inseln sehr grün, zerklüftet, tropisch, eine völlig andere Welt. Das rührt daher, dass sie viel jünger sind und sie haben uns stark an Kaua‘i erinnert.

Am ersten Tag haben wir einen tollen Ausflug mit Joselyne unternommen. Sie hatte mit ihrem umfangreichen Wissen über Flora, Fauna und Kultur brilliert. Wir haben das Tal Hatiheu und das Dorf Taipivai besucht und leckere lokale Spezialitäten bei ‚Chez Yvonne‘ genossen. Sie war sogar schon im Fernsehen, wie lustig sie mal live zu sehen und als ich mich vorgestellt habe, hat sie mir sogar ein kleines Geschenk gemacht. Zum Glück hat uns unser Guide noch vor dem Ansturm vom Kreuzfahrtschiff dahin gebracht. Die verhältnismässig vielen Leute bestimmen den Takt der Insel mit.

Am zweiten Tag haben wir spontan nochmals mit Joselyne den Nachmittag und das Dorf Hooumi im Taipivai Valley besucht. Die Strassen sind zu einem grossen Teil betoniert, aber teilweise auch unbefestigt. Gefühlt geht die Zeit hier noch etwa 60 Jahre hinter her. Das Internet gibt es hier zum Beispiel erst seit 2001.

Den dritten Tag haben wir mit einer rauhen Schiffsfahrt und einer Wanderung durch den tropischen Dschungel zu einem 350 Meter hohen Wasserfall im Hakaui Valley verbracht. Dabei hat uns Eric unser Guide, die verschiedenen Pflanzen, wie Vanille, Mangos, Papaya, Banane, Kokospalme, Ananasstaude, Kakao, Kaffee, Guave und viele einheimische Früchte gezeigt.

Upon arriving in Nuku Hiva we have first of all learned that even simple technology for the Baggage Claim performs its function. The first steps outside of the building, have shown us a rather desolate landscape. After an hour of driving through pine forests and over a pass road we arrived on the green side of the island. The road led through a beautiful plateau which reminded a little of Switzerland and the highest mountains are 1200 meters high.

In contrast to the Society Islands, the Marquesas Islands, are a completely different world as they are very green, rugged and tropical. This is because they are much younger and they strongly remind us of Kaua'i.

On the first day we took a great trip with Joselyne. She shines with her extensive knowledge of flora, fauna and culture. We have visited the valley Hatiheu and the village Taipivai and tasted delicious local specialties at ‘Chez Yvonne’. She was even on TV, how funny to see her live and when I introduced myself, she even made ​​me a small gift.

On the second day we spontaneously did again a tour with Joselyne. During the afternoon we visited the village Hooumi in Taipivai Valley with her. The roads are concreted to a large extent, but also partly unpaved. Time is here still about 60 years behind. The internet is here for example only since 2001.

On the third day we enjoyed a bumpy boat ride and did a hike through the tropical jungle to a 350 -foot waterfall in Hakaui Valley. Eric, our guide, showed us the various plants such as vanilla, mango, papaya, banana, coconut palm, pineapple plant, cocoa, coffee , guava and many native fruits.

Bei Regen sind wir im Verlauf des Morgens in Bora Bora im Hotel angekommen. Es scheint schon fast System zu haben. Wir haben allerdings auch gelernt, dass es hier meist nur kurz dafür dann aber heftig schüttet und die Wolken dann wieder der Sonne Platz machen. Und die Sonne offenbarte uns einen Anblick der uns staunen liess. Ein strahlend blaues Meer, weisse Sandstrände mit Palmen und das Hotel hat in mitten dieser Landschaft einen wunderschönen Garten angelegt.

Da wir so richtig im Ferien- und Erholungsmodus sind haben wir uns nach der Ankunft und auch am Folgetag etwas Ruhe gegönnt. Ein gutes Buch Lesen und den Blick in die Ferne schweifen lassen, was gibt es schöneres. Wir haben auch die Unterwasserwelt mit Schnorcheln etwas erkundet. Es gibt hier aber nicht mehr ganz so viele Fische, dafür einige recht grosse Exemplare. Ab und an schwimmt dafür aber ein Rochen vor dem Zimmer vorbei.

Um die Insel etwas zu erkunden haben wir eine 4x4 Jeeptour gemacht. Und der 4x4 war bei den Strassen in die Höhe auch definitiv nötig. So haben wir einen noch etwas anderen Blickwinkel von den “Bergen” auf die Lagune genossen und gelernt, dass der 2.Weltkrieg auch hier seine Spuren hinterlassen hat. Es gibt allein auf Bora Bora 8Kanon die von Amerikanern hier aufgestellt wurden. Zum Glück waren sie aber nie gebraucht worden.

Am Nachmittag haben wir dann noch die Gegend des Hotels mit einem Kajak erkundet. Wir müssen das aber noch etwas üben. Wir hatten uns während dieser „Paarterapie“ doch oft im Kreis gedreht. :-)

Etwas fehlt da doch noch? Zu Wasser, unter Wasser, am Land auf dem Strand und in den Höhen und als letzte Dimension die Luft. Bei einem Heliflug, sogar mit Pilotin :-), haben wir diese Insel strahlend schön wie eine Perle im Ozean gesehen. Ein unvergesslicher Flug.

Und als ob das nicht schon die Krönung gewesen wäre haben wir am Abend noch eine Fahrt mit dem Boot in den Sonnenuntergang unternommen. Nun ja, jeden Tag können wir es uns nicht so gut gehen lassen, aber es sind ja die Flitterwochen.

Nun den morgen geht es weiter in den Norden zu den Marquesas Inseln. Wir sind schon wahnsinnig gespannt darauf.

It was raining when we arrived during the morning in Bora Bora. It appears to be systematic. However, we have also learned that these rain showers are usually only short but then quite heavy. So shortly afterwards the sun appeared again and revealed an amazing landscape. A bright blue sea, white sand beaches with palm trees and the hotel has created a beautiful garden in the middle of this landscape.

Since we are really in the holiday and recreation mode, we didn’t do a lot after arrival, as well as the following day. We enjoyed reading a good book and looking at the beauty of nature. We also discovered the underwater world a bit with snorkeling. There aren’t that many fish, but some quite large ones and from time to time we saw rays passing in front of our bungalow.

In order to explore the island a bit, we made a 4x4 jeep tour. And the 4x4 was definitely necessary on the roads in the heights. We learned that the 2nd World War has left its marks also here and enjoyed a somewhat different perspective from the "peaks" onto the lagoon. The Americans have left 8 canons on Bora Bora, but luckily they were never used.

In the afternoon we explored the area of the hotel with a kayak. But we need to practice some more. We often paddled in circles during this special kind of couples therapy. :-)

But isn’t there something? On the water, under water, on land on the beach and on the hills and the last dimension is the air. During a helicopter flight, even with a woman as pilot :-), we have seen this island shining like a beautiful pearl in the middle of the ocean. An unforgettable flight.

To complete the day, the cherry on the icing was that we spent the evening on a boat to enjoy the sunset. Well we cannot stick to this standard every day, but once during honeymoon.

And now we are ready to go further north to the Marquesas Islands. We are already incredibly excited about it.

Von Mo’orea sind wir über Tahiti nach Ra’iatea geflogen und haben eine Nacht dort geschlafen. Am nächsten Tag bezogen wir unsere mobile Bleibe für die nächsten vier Tage. Wir haben uns entschlossen den Weg von Raiatea nach Bora Bora mit dem Segelschiff zurück zu legen. Wir haben auf jeden Fall den Altersschnitt auf dem Boot gesenkt und unsere Französischkenntnisse verbessert, die anderen drei Paare sind aus Frankreich gewesen, soviel sei schon mal verraten.

Einschiffung war um 12:00 Uhr, nach dem Mittagessen und einer kurzen Fahrt in der Lagune von Ra’iatea und Tahaa haben wir beim Tao Tao Motu einen ersten Schnorchelstop gemacht und uns durch eine Art Kanal zwischen den Korallen und vielen Fischen vorbei treiben lassen. Ein gelungener Start. Wer erkennt den sehr gut getarnten Fisch auf dem zweiten Bild? (Tipp: Er füllt in etwa 1/5 des Bildes aus)

Der Folgetag brachte uns aufs offene Meer. In 4 Stunden segelten wir bei stürmischer See nach Bora Bora.

Beim anschliessenden Schnorcheln haben wir Rochen und Haie beobachten können und anschliessend das Mittagessen genossen. Wir haben ganz viele Schwarzspitzenhaien und bis zu 4m grosse Zitronenhaie im tiefen Wasser der Lagune gesehen. Den Gänsehauteffekt gab es gratis mit dazu, zum Glück hatten die keinen Hunger.

Im Weiteren sind wir rund um Bora Bora gefahren um die Nacht vor Anker im Osten von Bora Bora zu verbringen.

Am dritten Tag sind wir noch vor dem Frühstück mit dem Beiboot zu einer natürlichen Putzstation für die Mantas gefahren. Da hat es ganz viele kleine Fische, welche die Mantas mit bis zu 4m Spannweite putzen. Schön zu sehen wie sie so erhaben durch das Wasser gleiten.

Nach dem frühmorgendlichen Bad gab es Frühstück und dann sind wir zum Motu Taurere gefahren. Auf dem Motu haben wir die Sonne genossen und ein tolles Picknick. Es gab den hier bekannten Poisson Cru, ein feines Kokosbrot, Poulet aus dem Erdofen, Reis und Pamplemuse. Da das Wasser an einer Stelle in der Lagune zu wenig tief ist kann man Bora Bora in der Lagune leider nicht mit dem Schiff umrunden. So ging es also gegen Abend wieder retour und wir konnten eine erneute Segelfahrt geniessen.

Und so hiess es schon ein letztes Mal frühstücken und in Bora Bora aussteigen. Wir haben diese vier Tag wahnsinnig genossen. Wir wurden wie Könige bekocht, unglaublich was in der kleinen Schiffsküche alles an lokalen Spezialitäten gezaubert wurde. Es waren vier ganz eindrückliche Tage die wir erleben durften und in denen wir Französisch Polynesien mit seinen Leuten und der Kulinarik kennen lernen konnten.

Wir danken allen die einen Teil beigetragen und uns diesen eindrücklichen Ausflug, mit mehr als einem tollen Sonnenuntergang und dem Genuss der vielen leckeren lokalen Spezialitäten ermöglich haben. Und dann war da ja noch der Joker, welchen wir verwendet haben um das Picknick auf dem Motu zu geniessen und einen Teil an diese tolle Schifffahrt beizutragen.

Das nächste Ziel ist klar definiert: Warten bis die Häuser nicht mehr schwanken. :-)

From Mo'orea we flew via Tahiti to Ra’iatea and slept there one night. The next day we moved into our mobile accommodation for the next four days. We have chosen to make our way from Raiatea to Bora Bora on a sailing ship. We have definitely lowered the average age on the boat and our French language skills improved, the other three pairs have been from France.
Embarkation was at 12:00 o’clock , after lunch and a short ride in the lagoon of Ra’iatea and Tahaa , we went for snorkeling at Tao Tao Motu and let us drift through a kind of channel between the corals and lots of fish. A good start.
The next day brought us to the open sea. In four hours we sailed to Bora Bora. During the next snorkeling we observed rays and sharks and then enjoyed lunch. Furthermore, we drove around Bora Bora to spend the night at anchor in the east of Bora Bora.
On the third day we went before breakfast in the dinghy to a natural cleaning station for manta rays. There are a lot of small fish, which clean the manta rays which have a width of up to four meters. It was nice to see how they are so sublime gliding through the water. Afterwards, we had breakfast and then we went to the Motu Taurere. On the Motu we enjoyed the sun and a great picnic. There was the here well-known poisson cru, a fine coconut bread, chicken from the earth oven, rice and grapefruit. Since the water is not deep enough at one point in the lagoon of Bora Bora you cannot go around in the lagoon by boat. So we went back again in the evening and we were again enjoying sailing.
On the four day it was already the last time we enjoyed breakfast on board as it was time for us to leave the boat in Bora Bora. We thoroughly enjoyed the four days. We have been eating like kings, unbelievable what delicious local specialties were conjured up in the small galley kitchen. We relished four very impressive days. We have been able getting to know French Polynesia’s people and the culinary.
We thank all who contributed to this impressive trip, enabling more than a great sunset and enjoying the many delicious local specialties. And then there was still the wild card, which we used to enjoy a picnic on the Motu and contribute a part of this great navigation.

The next goal is clearly defined: wait until the houses stop shaking.

Wir haben uns in Singapur sofort wohl gefühlt und die Woche ging wie im Flug vorbei. Wir haben hier eine sehr schöne und fotogene Stadt entdeckt. Dazu tragen natürlich auch architektonisch tolle Gebäude ihren Teil bei.

Die Wurzeln sind durch verschiedene Kulturen geprägt und man merkt auch noch den europäischen Einfluss. Was uns besonders gefiel ist das gute Essen (da spielt natürlich auch der Mix der Kulturen eine grosse Rolle) und wie viel hier nachhaltig in die Zukunft investiert wird. So gibt es viele grosse Parks und die ganze Stadt ist im generellen sehr grün. Dies kommt vor allem daher, dass jedes neu gebaute Haus einen Anteil an Grünfläche für die Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung stellen muss.

Was wir uns noch gegönnt haben ist der Drink mit Aussicht. Das musste natürlich ein ‚Singapur Sling‘ sein. Vielen herzlichen Dank an die Spender in Zürich.

Hier noch ein paar spezielle Impressionen:

We felt comfortable here in Singapore from the beginning on and the week here passed really quickly. We have found a picturesque city and the beautiful and nice looking building contribute their part to it.

The roots are influenced by different cultures and also you still feel the European influence. What we particularly liked is the good food and how much sustainable investment is done for the future. So there are many large parks and the whole town is in general very green. This comes mainly from the fact that every newly constructed home must provide a proportion of green space for the public.

During our stay we enjoyed a drink in one of the roof top bars with a nice drink. We had of course a ‘Singapore Sling’. Many thanks to the donors in Zurich.

And we close with some special impressions.

Nach tiefem und erholsamem Schlaf sind wir morgens in unserem kuscheligen Bett aufgewacht. Wow, danke allen die ihren Teil dazu beigetragen haben. Den ersten “richtigen” Tag in Singapur haben wir mit einem bombastischen Frühstück gestartet. Wir haben noch nie so ein grosses und reichhaltiges Buffet gesehen.

Am Ufer wurde eine grosse Landfläche aufgeschüttet und darauf die ‚Gardens by the Bay‘ errichtet. Das Grossprojekt im neuen Stadtteil Marina Bay soll die grüne Lunge der asiatischen Metropole werden, eine echte Investition in die Zukunft wie wir finden. In zwei riesigen Gewächshäusern gab es diverse Pflanzen zu sehen. Zum einen verschiedene Kakteen und Sukkulenten, aber auch exotische Europäische Pflanzen wie Geranien und Hibiskus. Wie doch die Perspektiven verschieden sind .

In einem weiteren Bereich gab es einen grossen Wasserfall und unzählige Orchideen zu bestaunen. Da gibt man sich zu Hause immer so mühe, die Pflänzchen zu hegen und zu pflegen und hier wachsen sie wie Unkraut.

Eine weitere Attraktion des Parks sind die sogenannten Super Trees. Die 25 bis 50 Meter hohen Konstruktionen aus Stahl und Beton sind Mammutbäumen nachempfunden. Hier wächst der Garten in die Höhe und in der Nacht sind sie beleuchtet. Ein bisschen wie im Film Avatar.

Den Tag haben wir mit einem Spaziergang abgeschlossen und die Sicht auf die Skyline von Singapur und die beleuchteten Super Trees genossen.

After a deep and restful sleep we woke up in the morning in our cozy bed. Wow , thanks to all who have contributed their part. The first "real" day in Singapore, we have started with a bombastic breakfast. We have never seen such a big and generous buffet.

On the coast a large land area was filled and they have built the ‘Gardens by the Bay’. The project in the new district of Marina Bay will be the green lung of Singapore in the future. In two huge greenhouses a lot of various plants can be seen. At first, various cacti and succulents, but also exotic European plants like geraniums and hibiscus were presented. How the perspectives are different . In the second greenhouse we could admire a large waterfall and numerous orchids.

Another attraction of the park are the so-called Super Trees. The 25 to 50 meter high constructions of steel and concrete are modeled sequoias. Here, the garden grows in height and at night they are lit. A bit like in the movie Avatar.

We closed the day with a walk and enjoyed the view of the Singapore skyline and the illuminated Super Trees.
